The
Dukes Creek Recreation Area in the Chattahoochee National Forest is one
of the most popular destinations in North Georgia. Here you can
picnic beside the cool rushing waters of Smith Creek, hike an overland
trail to other area destinations, or enjoy a moderate walk on the
one and one-tenth mile trail to Dukes Creek Falls.
The trail to the falls is interesting as it gradually
descends down to the base of the falls. Some of the trail is a wooden
boardwalk, with several staircases. At the bottom of the last stairway,
take a sharp left and continue about a quarter of a mile. Be alert, the
trail to the falls veers sharply to the right. It is well maintained as
it drops to the falls. When you arrive, there are two observation areas,
Do not leave the trail, or boardwalk. The rocks are
slippery and dangerous. Keep an eye on small children, as the roar of
the rushing water could easily drown out cries for help/
If
you must limit yourself to one or two sight-seeing trips while in the
Helen / Cleveland area, be sure that Dukes Creek Falls is one of your top
choices!
